History
Around 1640 this timber-framed property was built for the local doctor as his principal residence. Although records are a little vague, there is evidence of the Terry family, famous local chocolatiers, owning the property in order to make and sell their confectionery.
A restaurant has been trading in this building for at least fifty years and during the 60s it attracted many well-known personalities. Included were The Rolling Stones who scribbled their signatures in lipstick on the wall of the top floor bar.
In 1977 Plunkets was established and immediately. became a haven for local residents and students alike. All this time Great Uncle Plunket has kept a watchful eye over his domain, and his young face is featured on the front cover of our menu.
The thoughtful expression in this mid-Victorian portrait is attributable to him being unexpectedly dragged away from his toys in the nursery in order to suffer the tedium of sitting quietly for the artist, who happened to be his impatient uncle. His brother, who was the intended victim for this ordeal, was in hiding (under his bed) but no doubt his eventual fate was somewhat worse!
